What is Sprint Velocity?

Work a team completes per sprint.

How to calculate it

Calculate Sprint Velocity as: Story points completed per sprint. Pull the inputs from your connected data and track the trend over time in your dashboard.

Examples

Example 1

The team completes 32, 28 and 34 points over three sprints -> plan ~31 points next sprint.

Example 2

Over three sprints the team completes 32, 28 and 34 points -> plan around 31 points next sprint rather than committing to a one-off high.

Why it matters

Sprint velocity is the amount of work a team completes per sprint and aids capacity planning and forecasting. Tracked over several sprints, it gives a realistic basis for committing to future work. Comparing velocity across teams is meaningless because point estimation is relative to each team.

Benchmark context

Use the rolling average of recent sprints as the planning baseline; there is no cross-team benchmark, only a team's own trend.

Common pitfalls
